The new Executive Director start his job

Written by Daisy Dube

Bishop Dr JM Ramashapa started his duties as the Executive Director of the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa (LUCSA) on 1st September 2009, taking over from the retiring Executive Director, Bishop Dr Ambrose Moyo. He joins the organisation after leading the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) for five years, as her Presiding Bishop.

Bishop Dr JM Ramashapa is not new to LUCSA, he has been in the forefront of the HIV/AIDS battlefield with LUCSA and he has played an important role in the fight against the pandemic. He brings with him a wealth of experience and an in-depth understanding of the Diakonia Ministry.

The new Executive Director sees his position as a platform to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria, poverty, human trafficking for commercial sex and crime. “It marries my dedication to the fight against HIV & AIDS with the leadership skills I've developed in my career to date. There has been great progress in HIV & AIDS work in the past years, but we have to continue joining efforts to combat this pandemic. LUCSA has to continue to grow from strength to strength and I acknowledge the critical role that I have to play in contributing to its sustainability ultimately, helping it to grow further”. said the new leader.

During his tenure as the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) Bishop JM Ramashapa has been very vocal in his criticism of the social ills in the sub-region and governments that have failed to embrace the spirit compassion. He is one of the LUCSA leadership that recently called for the South African government to review the decriminalisation of prostitution bill.
